What You Need To Know

If your spouse’s or domestic partner’s employment status changes, and they’re no longer eligible for benefits coverage with their employer, there are many details — legal, financial, emotional — to consider. Here are some benefits-related actions you may want or need to take.

Health & Wellness Plans

Medical, Dental, and Vision

You may enroll your spouse or domestic partner in your medical, dental, and/or vision plan. You may also change plans or enroll yourself and your children if you were not previously enrolled.

Visit Benefitsolver within 31 days of your spouse’s or domestic partner’s employment status changing to enroll or make changes. If you miss this enrollment window, you’ll have to wait until the next Open Enrollment period.

Health Savings Account (HSA)

If you have an HSA and you’re changing whom you cover in your UnitedHealthcare medical plan, review your HSA contribution limit to ensure that you maximize your savings but don’t over-contribute. Call Fidelity at (800) 544-3716 if you need help accessing your IRS HSA contribution limit.

You can change your HSA contribution amount or beneficiaries at any time through Benefitsolver. Consider whether you’d like to add your spouse or domestic partner as a beneficiary at this time.

Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

You may enroll in or increase your contributions to your Health Care FSA, which lets you save up to $3,200 per calendar year on a pretax basis for qualified health care expenses. Contact HealthEquity, the FSA plan administrator, at (877) 924-3967 if you have any questions.

Visit Benefitsolver within 31 days of your spouse’s or domestic partner’s employment status changing to enroll or make changes. If you miss this enrollment window, you’ll have to wait until the next Open Enrollment period.

Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

You may enroll in or change your contributions to your Dependent Care FSA, which allows you to make pretax contributions of up to $5,000 per calendar year for dependent care expenses.

Life and AD&D Insurance

When your spouse or domestic partner loses benefits coverage, you may:

  • Increase your supplemental life insurance up to $50,000 above your current benefit level (not to exceed the lesser of 5 times your annual earnings or $500,000). Evidence of Insurability (EOI) is required for amounts that exceed this.
  • Decrease your supplemental life insurance by any amount.
  • Increase (or decrease) your supplemental AD&D insurance by any amount, up to the plan limits.
  • Enroll your spouse or domestic partner and/or their dependent children.
  • Add your spouse and/or their children as a beneficiary. (You can change your beneficiaries for your life and AD&D insurance at any time throughout the year.)

Visit Benefitsolver within 31 days of your spouse’s or domestic partner’s employment status changing to enroll or make changes. If you miss this enrollment window, you’ll have to wait until the next Open Enrollment period.

Financial Benefits

401(k) Plan

When your spouse’s or domestic partner’s employment status changes, you may review your beneficiary designation for your 401(k) Plan. Federal law requires that you name your spouse as the sole beneficiary of your 401(k) account, unless you have their written and notarized consent to designate another individual.

Go to Fidelity or call (800) 835-5095 to learn more and make changes to your 401(k) account.

Financial Wellbeing

If your spouse’s or domestic partner’s employment status changes, you may face a wide range of financial issues. Synopsys offers several financial wellbeing programs that can help.

Other Benefits

Group Legal Plan

If you’re enrolled in the MetLife Legal Plans, you can work with their attorneys to address any legal issues you may be facing. Create an account at MetLife Legal Plans, or call (800) 821-6400.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Having a spouse’s or domestic partner’s employment status change can be challenging. You may want to consider reaching out to our EAP. Professional counselors are available 24/7 to assist you and refer you to therapists and coaches. You have access to a limited number of free counseling visits a year, per covered family member.
